A paradise
The concept of paradise has been an important one throughout the ages. Its power is in its ability to make human existence meaningful and livable, despite the fact it is inevitably fleeting. Paradise is a place of absolute peace and abundance. It is a location that is outside of normal historical times and is therefore invulnerable to crime, sickness or death. It is also a place populated by beings who are always healthy and young.
Paradise is described in many different ways It ranges from the Garden of Eden of the Bible to the lush Pacific Ocean islands of novels and Gauguin's paintings. It is also visible in the modern world, with the rise of communes and the increasing interest in outdoor living and gardening. The term utopia, actually, invokes images of paradise. Although not all utopias have religious connotations, they typically include motifs from paradise. They are also designed to achieve certain qualities and characteristics of paradise in reality.
There are a variety of meanings for the word paradise however, the majority of them describe a state of extreme beauty or pleasure. It can also mean an ideal location for any particular sport or activity, such as a golfer's paradise or a hummingbird's paradise. In a religious context it could refer to heaven as the heaven where the righteous go after they die.
Several different languages have used the word paradise, but it was originally derived from the ancient Iranian language of Avestan. The word is pairidaeza or "walled enclosure," from the roots pairi, "around," and daeza, "wall." It became part of the Hebrew and other Aramaic scriptures as paradeisos and was later adapted to Greek, where it became paradise.
In the Bible In the Bible, the Garden of Eden is paradise. It was a beautiful spot where the first couple lived, unaffected of illness and death. They lost their paradise but they refused to obey God. In later Bible prophecies, paradise is described as a location in the eschatological future, where people who are happy can live forever. The term "paradise" could also be a reference to a state of happiness, either psychological or spiritual, and happiness.
